Can  the crew predict how fast Celerity will sail? (hint: the answer is 'yes')

Celerity carries five different types of sails: a main, two jibs, a staysail, six spinnakers, and two storm sails. Some are designed to help her sail upwind, some for sailing with the wind on her beam, and many for sailing downwind in differing wind strengths.

The sail selection chart to the left helps the crew decide what sails to use depending on the strength and angle of the wind. The term 'reef' refers to the wind speeds at which the crew  reduces (or reefs) the mainsail to keep from being overpowered by the wind. When overpowered, the boat   slows down as it gets pushed sideways ("leeway") and risks  damage.

The diagram to the right is called the "polar chart". Generated by a computer that looks at the design of the boat, it depicts predicted boat speeds at any given wind speed and direction.
